A resident who lives nearby said it’s sad knowing that someone would drive by and shoot someone where kids play.

‘’And he was just out there enjoying himself, I guess, and for him to get shot and lose his life, it’s terrible because he was just a baby. I feel bad for his mom, dad, his whole family,” the resident said.

Rasheeda Ali, the organizer of Grannies on Guard, a youth organization that focuses on keeping kids off the streets. She has her events at the rec center often, and she said this hasn’t happened since Michael Fluellen was killed. The center is also named after him.

‘’And his was the case of mistaken identity. He’s walking home from the rec, from the basketball court where this young man today lost his life. So, these drive by shootings and these, we don’t know what that was all about. We just have no clue,” Ali said.

Jerome Lawson with Cure Violence said they just celebrated Fluellen this past weekend, and hearing this young man lose his life yet again in the same area saddens him.

‘’It’s a horrible feeling because it’s one of our youth, you know, that unfortunately got their life taken from them. However it’s even saddening, even more horrendous feeling when think about where the parents in situations like this. You have to know what your children are doing, you have to be accountable for your children,’' he said.

There is no word on any arrests being made or motives to the shooting, but CPD is urging anyone with information to contact them that can be done anonymously.
